About Me

My photo
Ian
Coomba Park, NSW, Australia
my interest in nature started as a kid observing the critters that visited our suburban garden and the passion for the natural world has continued through my life. Now I am retired and live on a country property we have such an abundance of wildlife I see something of interest everyday. This prompted me to start a blog and having found the medium to my liking I have added another with broader subjects.

Japara's story

The aboriginal Dreamtime legends are filled with wonderous mythical ancestors, all intricately linked to the country and the universe. When we were looking for a name for the property we wanted to choose something that would reflect our feelings of the importance Aboriginal culture and the link between the land and the dreamtime stories. There are many Japara stories and they vary according to location and the story tellers. However Japara is known as the Moon-Man and the stories revolve around the cycles of the moon. We are fortunate to see the moon rise nightly in the east, as it clears the sea and the coastal hills and then have a silvery path reflected on the lake before us. It seemed appropriate that we should honour Japara on his nightly journey.

The nature of Japara

Landform

A peninsular bounded by Wallis Lake on the east, nosing into the Coolongolook River in the north and Shallow Bay on the west with a central ridge running the north south axis. The highest point on the ridge rises to 86m from lake level and has a grove of mature spotted gums on the peak. Initially much of the surrounding area was clear of trees and expansive views were over Wallis Lake south to Shelly Beach headland, east over Wallis Island across Cape Hawk and North to the Brother's coastal mountains and Crowdy Head. With removal of most of the cattle from the properties there has been extensive regeneration of the eucalyptus forest and the views are now filtered through the trees.

Japara is located on the southern end of the peninsular on either side of the ridge

Vegetation

The original vegetation of the peninsular can be envisaged from the remnant original vegetation located on the western side of the ridge. Although selectively logged it was not clear stripped as most of the area in the pastoral property had been using the bulldozers and chain method. The vegetation is of the dry woodland with pockets of wet woodland on the southern side of the hill. The dominant tree over the property is Eucalyptus maculata (spotted gum) in association with Eucalyptus paniculata (Grey ironbark), Eucalyptus punctata (Grey gum), and Eucalyptus pilularis (Blackbutt), Eucalyptus acmenoides (White mahogany), Eucalyptus umbra (Broad-leaved White mahogany, Eucalyptus gumifera (Red bloodwood) and scattered Lophostemon confertus (Brush box), Allocasuarina torulosa (Forest oak). The small tree understory species though the forest include Acacia binervata (Two-veined hickory), Acacia implexa (Hickory), Acacia longifolia (Sydney golden wattle), Allocasuarina littoralis (Black She-Oak), Casuarina glauca (Swamp She-Oak), Callistemon salignus (Willow bottlebrush), Exocarpus cupressiformis (Native cherry). The north western corner is in a gully which includes a corner of the Livistona australis (Cabbage tree ) grove which is in the main on the neighboring property, juvenile plants are scattered through the forest as a result of seeds dropped by birds.
